Why fire drills protect people and institutions
Fire drills do more than satisfy a policy or check off an accreditation requirement. They help people get comfortable with the process before pressure sets in and answer the question that matters: Will this work when we need it?
When everyone knows where to go, who leads and what happens when, panic doesn't take over. And if the plan breaks, you find out during the drill, not during the real emergency.
That's the value of practice. It removes guesswork before the pressure hits.
The institutional version of a fire drill
Let's translate this to campus terms: You almost certainly have backups in place. The harder question is whether anyone has tested whether they restore.
Most institutions we talk to haven't. They rarely realize it until something goes wrong and IT is scrambling to figure out whether the backup will restore, how long it will take and which systems come back first.
That's when the cost gets real — and on a campus, the cost is rarely just money.
A multi-day outage during add/drop or census means advisors can't register students, financial aid can't disburse, faculty can't post grades and the help desk can't answer the one question everyone is asking. Title IV reporting deadlines don't move because your SIS is down.
For teams that have never practiced recovery, those hours can easily stretch into days — and days during a registration window are hard to make up.
What recovery testing looks like on a campus

What happens when you skip the drill
When recovery has never been tested, even a routine disruption can turn into an institutional problem.
Staff lose access and sit idle while leadership fields questions from a provost, a board or a parent that nobody can answer. Advising stalls, the registrar can't pull records, student accounts can't process payments and grades sit unposted.
What should have taken two hours now takes two days because nobody practiced the steps.
The cost isn't just lost time. It's lost enrollment activity, damaged trust with students and families, and an incident report that will be read closely at your next audit.
