Where does this actually help and how do we use it without creating a security, privacy, or academic integrity nightmare?
That's the right question.
Because right now, AI in higher education is like a new teaching assistant who showed up on campus without orientation.
They can be incredibly helpful.
They can also accidentally share the wrong data, hallucinate answers, or undermine trust if no one sets boundaries.
Used well, AI saves time and reduces administrative drag.
Used casually, it creates data exposure, compliance risks, and confusion across campus.

If someone isn't sure whether a task or dataset is appropriate for AI, the default answer should be:
"Pause and ask."

What AI Done Right Looks Like on Campus
AI adoption that works usually looks boring and that's a good thing.
A department:
- Picks one or two low-risk, time-wasting processes
- Applies AI with clear rules
- Measures whether it actually helps
- Expands slowly
Not a massive "AI transformation."
A practical, controlled improvement.
The institutions moving ahead aren't the loudest about AI.
They're the ones that set boundaries early and experimented responsibly.
The Bigger Picture
The real risk with AI in higher education isn't that it exists.
It's that it gets adopted unevenly, quietly, and without guardrails until a privacy incident, academic integrity issue, or compliance problem forces everyone to react.
AI can absolutely reduce workload and friction on campus.
But only when:
- Policies exist
- Expectations are clear
- Data boundaries are respected
- Humans stay accountable
The question isn't whether AI is being used across your institution.
It's whether it's being used intentionally or accidentally.
And those two paths lead to very different outcomes.
